Barry Road Pool was built in 1903 and has been a key part of the Northampton community since it first opened. Generations of local children have taken their first strokes here, creating lasting memories—some fond, some filled with the typical nerves of early swimming lessons! When the pool was first established, records show that local suppliers provided hundreds of towels and swimwear, reflecting its importance even then.
The pool has a fascinating history, even serving as a hospital ward during World War I when the school was requisitioned by the military. Over the decades, it has remained a valued space for learning to swim and developing water confidence. Today, Barry Road Pool continues to be a place where children can build essential life skills in a welcoming and supportive environment.
Aqualight started using Barry Road Pool in 2003 to teach babies and children, some 100 years after it’s construction. In 2018, the pool was due for closure but Aqualight stepped in and we took over the management of the pool from Barry Road Primary School who could no longer afford to keep it running.
The water is kept at a warm and comfortable temperature of between 30°C and 31°C to ensure everyone can concentrate on their swimming.
